Sharpen Your Common Sense & Presence of Mind
Reflecting on my experiences in leadership, I want to share insights with professionals who are entering the workforce with bright aspirations, eager to climb the ladder of success. My advice is simple: pause, take a moment to observe your surroundings, stay grounded, and practice patience. Fulfill your responsibilities with integrity and trust the process—relax, follow through, and be consistent in your organizational roles.
Leadership isn’t something that can be learned overnight. It comes from growth within your role, and a commitment to organizational values.
Leadership is a timeless evergreen subject, always popular among readers across generations. But much like ships aren’t meant to remain docked, aspiring leaders need to venture out, sharpen their skills, and take advantage of leadership opportunities in the workplace.
To grow as a leader, observe your superiors—how they conduct themselves can leave a lasting impression. Even brief interactions with higher-ups like the General Manager, Vice President, or CEO can be a learning experience. My advice to emerging leaders is to be like a sponge, always ready to absorb and internalize the qualities of those above them in the hierarchy.
Leadership development shouldn’t be limited to the workplace. I believe it’s important to take initiatives at home, among friends, and in social settings as well. Organizing activities in these contexts teaches you to delegate, coordinate, and communicate effectively. Volunteering for responsibilities helps build confidence and fosters a proactive mindset.
Additionally, I encourage leaders to be readers. Books can have a powerful, positive influence, so make reading a habit. At the same time, work on your interpersonal and communication skills—authenticity and integrity are essential.
My approach to leadership is simple: observe, evaluate, and choose the best solution for each situation. Leadership is all about presence of mind—it’s not as complicated as some make it seem. Just as a cricketer becomes a better batter by stepping up to face the ball, a future leader must step forward, embrace opportunities, and give their best effort.
The key to leadership is focusing on both the process and the results—they’re the sum of your efforts. Keep this in mind as you pursue your leadership journey.
